The ironic thing is as I'm typing out this post, I'm currently seated at a restaurant, waiting for my order. 


Drinks (Minuman)


1. Drinks - Minuman

    - What are your list of drink choices? - Apakah senarai minuman yang awak ada?

2. Coffee - Kopi

    - Can I get a cup of black coffee? - Bolehkah saya dapat satu kopi O?


Note: In Malaysia, "Black coffee" is Kopi O
          *However, it is NOT sugarless. For a pure black coffee (one that is sugarless), you will have to say "Kopi O kosong".

Kopi - This is coffee with condensed milk.
Kopi C - This is coffee with evaporated milk and sugar.
Kopi O - This is coffee without milk BUT with added sugar.
Kopi C kosong - This is coffee with evaporated milk BUT without sugar.
Kopi O kosong - This is coffee WITHOUT sugar and milk. (The pure black coffee.)

Note that if it has the word "kosong" it is indicating "without sugar"


3. Tea - Teh

    - I would like a cup of hot tea. - Saya nak secawan teh panas.


Note: Just like coffee, we have teh, teh O, teh O kosong, teh C, teh C kosong

Teh - This is the regular milk tea. It is black tea with condensed milk.
Teh O - This is black tea WITH sugar.
Teh C - This is black tea WITH evaporated milk and sugar.
Teh O kosong - This is black tea WITHOUT sugar.
Teh C kosong - This is black tea with evaporated milk WITHOUT sugar.

Note that if it has the word "kosong" it is indicating "without sugar". 

In Malaysia, the famous version of tea would be the "Teh tarik". It is black tea with condensed milk. What differentiates it from the regular milk tea or "Teh" is that it is poured back and forth repeatedly between two jugs from a height. It is presented with a "frothy" top. 


4. Beer - Bir

    - Sorry, I don't drink beer. - Maaf, saya tak minum bir.

5. Soft drink - Minuman ringan

    (Carbonated drink - Minuman berkarbonat)
    - My favourite brand of soft drink is Coke. - Jenama minuman ringan kegemaran saya ialah Coke.

6. Wine - Wain

    - For me, a glass of red wine. - Untuk saya, segelas wain merah.

7. Water - Air (ā - yèr)

    - Can I get a bottle of water? - Bolehkah saya dapat sebotol air?

8. Ice - Ais (Pronounced as "ice" in English)

    (Iced water - Ais kosong)
    - One ice water, please. - Satu ais kosong.


Note: In Malaysia, "iced water" is ais kosong. Although, technically iced water should be air ais. However, we do not use that term.


9. Sugar - Gula (gū - lè)

    - One kopi O but less sugar, please. - Satu kopi O tetapi kurang gula.


Note: "Less" - kurang
         "More" - lebih

Other than referring to sugar, one can also refer to the sweetness level of the drink. For example, less sweet or more sweet. For that, "sweet" means manis.
"Less sweet" - kurang manis
"More sweet" - lebih manis


10. Cold - Sejuk

      - This drink is not cold enough. Please add more ice. - Minuman ini kurang sejuk. Tolong tambahkan ais.


Note: "Add" - tambah
         "Reduce" - kurang


11. Hot - Panas

      - Be careful. It's hot. - Berhati-hati. Panas.

Food (Makanan)


1. Sandwich - Sandwic

    - Do you sell sandwiches? - Adakah awak menjual sandwic?

2. Appetiser - Pembuka selera

    - What are we having as an appetiser? - Apakah yang akan kita ada sebagai pembuka selera?

3. Main course - Hidangan utama

    - For the main course, we will be serving chicken rice. - Untuk hidangan utama, kita akan menghidangkan nasi ayam.

4. Dessert - Pencuci mulut / Pembasuh mulut

    - I had a plate of watermelon for dessert. - Saya makan sepinggan tembikai sebagai pencuci mulut. / Saya makan sepinggan tembikai sebagai pembasuh mulut.

5. Fried chicken - Ayam goreng

    - I prefer fried chicken instead of chicken soup. - Saya lebih gemar ayam goreng berbanding sup ayam. 


Note: In almost all of the restaurants in Malaysia, the menu is usually bilingual. Thus, you won't really have much trouble when it comes to ordering. 


6. Vegetarian - Makanan sayur-sayuran

    Vegan - Makanan vegan
    
    Halal - Halal


Note: In Malaysia, at the moment, there is no special term or specific word for "vegetarian" or "vegan"
It is commonly referred to as makanan sayur-sayuran
- If you want to say "I'm a vegetarian", it is "saya makan sayur", which literally translates to "I eat vegetables".


7. Sauce - Sos

    - Can I get some chilli sauce, please? - Bolehkah saya mendapat sos cili?

8. Seafood - Makanan laut

    - I'm allergic to seafood. - Saya ada alahan terhadap makanan laut.

9. Soup - Sup

    - Chicken soup. - Sup ayam.

10. Eggs - Telur

      - No, I don't eat eggs. - Tak, saya tak makan telur.

11. Fruits - Buah-buahan

      - I usually have fruits after my meal. - Biasanya, saya makan buah-buahan selepas makanan saya. 

12. Set meal - Makanan set

      - The set meal is cheaper. - Makanan set lebih murah.

13. Cake - Kek

      - I would like a slice of chocolate cake, please. - Saya nak sekeping kek coklat.

Taste (Rasa)


1. Salt - Garam

    Salty - Masin
    - This food is salty. It has too much salt. - Makanan ini masin. Ada terlalu banyak garam.

2. Spicy - Pedas

    - Less spicy - Kurang pedas.
    - More spicy - Lebih pedas.

3. Tasty / Delicious - Sedap

     - This nasi lemak is delicious. - Nasi lemak ini sedap.


Note: In Malaysia, I would say the iconic dish is the Nasi lemak. It is a dish which comprises of rice cooked in coconut milk, egg, cucumbers, anchovies and sambal
Sambal is a form of chilli puree.
Normally, it is consumed during breakfast and it can be found sold by vendors at the side of the road. It is usually wrapped in banana leaves and cost around RM1 to RM2. 


4. Sweet - Manis

    - Less sweet. - Kurang manis.
    - More sweet. - Lebih manis.

Others (Lain-lain)


1. Portion - Hidangan

    - I would like a smaller portion. - Saya nak hidangan yang lebih kecil.


Note: "Nak" is actually an abbreviation of "hendak" and it means "to want"
If you want to express a negative sentence, it is "tak" which is an abbreviation of "tidak"
For example: I want some ice. - Saya nak ais.
                     don't want any ice. - Saya tak nak ais.


2. Reservation - Tempahan

    - I have a reservation under the name of Jameson. - Saya mempunyai tempahan bawah nama Jameson.

3. Menu - Menu

    - Could you please bring us the menu? - Bolehkah anda tolong bawakan menu?

4. Bill - Bil

    - I'll pay the bill. - Saya akan membayar bil.

5. A party - Satu parti

    - I will be having my birthday party in a restaurant. - Saya akan mengadakan parti hari jadi saya di sebuah restoran.

6. Candle - Lilin

    - Make sure that there are twelve candles. - Pastikan ada dua belas batang lilin. 

7. Cashier - Kaunter pembayaran / Juruwang

    - Please pay at the cashier. - Tolong bayar di kaunter pembayaran. / Tolong bayar di juruwang. 

8. Credit card - Kad kredit

    - I will pay by credit card. - Saya akan membayar melalui kad kredit. 

9. Order - Pesan / Pesanan

    - I have ordered for the both of us. - Saya telah membuat pesanan makanan untuk kami berdua. 

10. Breakfast - Sarapan

      Lunch - Makanan tengahari 
      Dinner - Makanan malam
