---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this lesson, we will be focusing on dates or rather, usage of number in dates and also ordinal numbers.

Before we move on, do check out my post on numbers and months:

Whereby I would be teaching numerals in Malay from a single digit to a million and also teaching the months of the Gregorian calendar in Malay.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dates (Tarikh)

1. Date - Tarikh (Tā-ríhk)

    - What is today's date? - Hari ini tarikh apa?

When it comes to the usage of number in dates, the order is  (DD/MM/YY). The month comes in the middle after the date.

For example: 27 March 1996 or March 27 1996 (depending on which arrangement you use), in Malay, it would be 27 Mac 1996

However, if we were to use ordinal numbers in dates, the word "haribulan" is added after the number.

For example: 31st May 1967 or May 31st 1967
                     - 31 haribulan Mei 1967 / 31hb Mei 1967

Note: The word "haribulan" is ONLY used for dates.

Let's go through a few examples:
  • 15th September 1906 / September 15th 1906 - 15hb September 1906
  • 2nd December 1881 / December 2nd 1881 - 2hb Disember 1881
  • 23rd June 2016 / June 23rd 2016 - 23hb Jun 2016

It wouldn't be much of a problem if it were written. However, if we were to verbalise it, how would it be?

For example: 14 October 2001 / October 14 2001
                     - Empat belas Oktober dua ribu satu.
                     - This literally translates to "fourteen October two thousand and one".

Note that, this is CARDINAL.

It wouldn't be much difference if we were to verbalise it in its ordinal form. Just add the "haribulan".

For example: 22nd July 2003 / July 22nd 2003
                     - Dua puluh dua haribulan Julai dua ribu tiga.
                     - This literally translates to "twenty-second July two thousand and three".

Note that, this is ORDINAL.

Ordinal Numbers (Nombor ordinal)

Note: In Malay, the word "ke-" is added to the front of a cardinal number to represent an ordinal number EXCEPT the word "first"

First - Pertama
Second - Kedua (Ke-2)
Third - Ketiga (Ke-3)
Fourth - Keempat (Ke-4)
Fifth - Kelima (Ke-5)
Sixth - Keenam (Ke-6)
Seventh - Ketujuh (Ke-7)
Eight - Kelapan (Ke-8)
Ninth - Kesembilan (Ke-9)
Tenth - Kesepuluh (Ke-10)
Eleventh - Kesebelas (Ke-11)
Twentieth - Kedua puluh (Ke-20)
Thirtieth - Ketiga puluh (Ke-30)
Fortieth - Keempat puluh (Ke-40)
Fiftieth - Kelima puluh (Ke-50)
Sixtieth - Keenam puluh (Ke-60)
Seventieth - Ketujuh puluh (Ke-70)
Eightieth - Kelapan puluh (Ke-80)
Ninetieth - Kesembilan puluh (Ke-90)
Hundredth - Keseratus (Ke-100)
Thousandth - Keseribu (Ke-1000)

Note: To make an ordinal number, add the word "ke" before the number.

For example: Seventy-six (76) - Tujuh puluh enam
                     Seventy-sixth (76th) - Ketujuh puluh enam (Ke-76)

Note: In Malay, if you want to mention "The thirteenth" you have to ADD the word "yang".

For example: The first - Yang pertama
                     The eighth - Yang kelapan

Now, if you want to mention "the fifth time", you have to add the word "kali" at the front which means "times" as in frequency.

For example: The tenth time she has won a gold medal.
                     - Kali yang kesepuluh dia menang emas medal.

This is the third time that I've warned him this week. - Ini merupakan kali yang ketiga saya menegurnya dalam minggu ini.

Example of sentences with ordinal numbers:
  • First of all, I would like to welcome you to our city. - Pertama sekali, saya ingin mengucapkan selamat datang ke bandar kami.
  • October is the tenth month of the year. - Oktober merupakan bulan kesepuluh (ke-10) dalam setahun.
  • Is that your engagement ring on your third finger? - Adakah itu cincin tunang awak pada jari ketiga (ke-3) awak?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That is all for this lesson.

See you soon!

Over and out~ :)
