How many of you create a shopping list before you go shopping?
When I was much younger, I recall my mom creating a shopping list the morning before we go grocery shopping. She would be rather strict and bought only what was on the list.
However as years went on, the habit of creating a list before going grocery shopping somehow diminished. Looking back, it actually prevents impulse buying.
Thus, this lesson is a continuation from the previous one which was on Shopping Places.
It is the Shopping List or rather "Senarai barang-barang membeli" in Malay.
1. Sugar - Gula
- Could you pass me a bit of sugar? - Bolehkah awak beri saya sedikit gula?
2. Salt - Garam
- The food is very salty. - Makanan ini amat masin.
Note: When expressing "very" in Malay, we often use the word sangat. However, sometimes the word amat is used too and it is equivalent to sangat.
For example: Makanan ini sangat masin.
Makanan ini amat masin.
3. Oil - Minyak
- I have to buy a bottle of olive oil. - Saya perlu membeli sebotol minyak zaitun.
4. Egg - Telur
- I'm going to buy some eggs. - Saya akan membeli beberapa biji telur.
5. Milk - Susu
- There is only half a litre of milk left. - Hanya terdapat separuh liter susu yang tinggal.
Note: The word tinggal in Malay has various meanings. Depending on usage, in means "to live" or "left (remaining).
For example: I live on Elm Street.
- Saya tinggal di Jalan Elm.
There is still a few apples left in the basket.
- Masih tinggal beberapa biji epal dalam bakul.
6. Rice - Nasi
- The rice has spoiled. - Nasi sudah basi.
Note: In Malay, the term for "spoiled" is actually rosak. However, in terms of rice, there is a special word for "spoiled" and it is basi (bā-sí).
7. Yeast - Yis
- Do you sell yeast? - Adakah awak menjual yis?
8. Butter - Mentega
- I need about 500 grams of butter. - Saya memerlukan lebih kurang 500 gram mentega.
9. Cheese - Keju (Ké-jù)
- I am going to add mozzarella cheese on my pizza. - Saya akan meletakkan keju mozzarella pada piza saya.
10. Soap - Sabun
- I don't prefer to use liquid soap. I prefer bar soap. - Saya tak berapa suka guna sabun cecair. Saya lebih suka guna sabun bar.
11. Flour - Tepung
- Where is the flour section? - Di manakah seksyen tepung?
12. Bread - Roti
- A loaf of bread. - Sebuku roti.
13. Detergent - Detergen
- Which is the most effective detergents for removing stains? - Detergen yang manakah paling efektif untuk mengeluarkan kesan kotor?
Note: Kotor means "dirty" and kesan means the effects or causes. Together, this makes "stain" or "dirty stain".
14. Softener - Pelembut pakaian
- If you don't put softener, the clothes will not be soft. - Kalau awak tak letak pelembut pakaian, semua pakaian itu takkan menjadi lembut.
Note: "Will not" in Malay is tidak akan. However, in daily usage, we usually use the abbreviated or informal version which is takkan.
15. Noodles - Mi
- I'm craving for fried noodles. - Saya ingin makan mi goreng.
Note: In Malaysia there is a variety of noodles. There are the small strand noodles, the large strand noodles and the flat rice noodles.
The small strand noodles better known as mee hoon, we call it as mihun. The large strand noodles which is the thick one or better known as mee, we call it as mi. Lastly, the flat rice noodles, we call it as kuey teow.
