So, basically, this is THE DAY I embark on my tertiary education journey beginning as a freshman at university. Which university in particular? MAHSA University at Bandar Saujana Putra, Selangor Malaysia.
What does MAHSA stands for? It is an abbreviation for Malaysian Allied Health Science Academy.
I am under the Faculty of Medicine, pursuing my studies in MBBS which is Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. It is a five year course.
However, enough of that and let's talk about the FIRST day. The FIRST day of my two weeks orientation. The FIRST day of med school. The FIRST night staying at the hostel. The FIRST time staying away from my parents. The FIRST day of the rest of my tertiary education.
I arrived a day earlier and stayed at a nearby budget hotel. Saujana City Hotel to be exact.
It was stated on my offer letter that I was to register myself at 9 a.m. Had breakfast with my parents and off we went to the university, arriving half an hour earlier than the time stated.
Upon arrival, we went over to the main building and were greeted and welcomed by a few of the lecturers and facilitators. Off we head to the auditorium on the 12th floor.
The place was already crowded with people. First of all, we had to verify our academic payments for the first year. Then, we headed off to the hostel and accommodation sector to settle any outstanding payment and to receive our room key followed by the full registration of the student whereby, we had to hand in the certified copies of our academic certificates along with two passport sized photos to the admins.
All in all, it took almost 3 hours to get everything settled due to the plethora of people (students and their families gathering inside of the auditorium).
The next stop, "Dean's Open House". There, we (students and their families) were greeted by the Dean for the Faculty of Medicine and briefed on what's to come, what we (as medical students) are getting ourselves into.
We were brought around on a short tour of our (to be) classes for the medicine students. We were shown to the labs, classes and lecture halls of various blocks of where we were to be.
We walked a lot and for those of you who are counting your steps, this is extremely good because you'd be sure to reach the minimum target of 10 000 steps.
A good tip though is to use the stairs since many people opt to use the lift. Saves time from waiting for the lift.
What precedes next was the lunch break and during that time, most of us checked out our hostels and unloaded our stuffs.
Since the building is new, as it was just recently launched this year, most of the rooms were unoccupied. Hence, the floors were really dusty and the toilet, well.... Let's just say it's a nightmare. However, after a good scrub ad cleaning session, everything was good to go.
The best part about it though is that the facilities provided were still new. The sad part is, my room is on the 11th floor. Imagine if the lifts were to be out of order. (Well, at least I can skip gym.)
After the lunch break, we headed to the auditorium for the opening ceremony of our orientation. What followed next was the "ice breaking session".
We were told to go to our respective faculties and each of us were numbered from 1~10. Then, we were divided into groups of 10. For example, the people of number 1 had to come together and form a group.
We each introduced ourselves, wrote our name down in a separate piece of paper as our attendance were to be taken each day for the remaining days of our orientation.
There were games and we were to perform on stage and compete with other members of the group.
Personally, I wasn't into the games that were conducted. However, that is not the point as it forced us to interact with the fellow members of the group and form friendship bonds.
It ended at 5 p.m. I did not find it exhausting at all and the duration set for our orientation that day was just right.
Some of us returned to our hostels and some of us went home.
What about the hostels? Well, that is another story to be continued, next time.
See you soon!~ :)
