The title of this post is "Furniture" otherwise known as "Perabot" in Malay.
This is a rather long post, thus I would be opting out my usual introduction.
In this post, I will be teaching not only furnitures but also the items that can be found in the living room, bedroom, dining room, dapur and bathroom.

This is a rather long post, thus I would be opting out my usual introduction.
In this post, I will be teaching not only furnitures but also the items that can be found in the living room, bedroom, dining room, dapur and bathroom.
In the Living Room (Dalam ruang tamu)
1. Television - Televisyen
- We seldom watch the shows on the television. - Kami jarang menonton rancangan-rancangan dalam televisyen.
2. Telephone - Telefon
- The telephone rang in the living room while I was in the shower. - Ketika saya sedang mandi, telefon berdering di ruang tamu.
3. Sofa - Sofa
- Every night, we watch television on the sofa. - Pada setiap malam, kami menonton televisyen di atas sofa.
4. Painting - Lukisan
- The painting on the wall was painted by my niece. - Lukisan yang di atas dinding itu dilukis oleh anak saudara saya.
5. Fan - Kipas
- Please switch on the fan, I can't stand the warmth in this room. - Tolong hidupkan suis kipas. Saya tak boleh tahan kepanasan dalam bilik ini.
Note: The correct term for "switching on" something would be menghidupkan suis.
For example: switching on the lights
- menghidupkan suis lampu / menghidupkan lampu
switching on the air con
- menghidupkan suis pendingin hawa / menghidupkan pendingin hawa
However, in Malaysia, it is common to hear "buka suis lampu" or "buka lampu" which means to "switch on the lights".
It is an informal way of speaking. It is incorrect however as "buka" means "open". If you were to translate it literally, it would be "open the light switch".
6. Magazine rack - Rak majalah
- There are a few magazines available on the magazine rack. - Terdapat beberapa buah majalah di atas rak majalah.
7. Shelf - Rak
- Shall I put the books on the shelf? - Perlukah saya meletakkan buku-buku tersebut di atas rak?
8. Curtains - Langsir
- Amy drew the curtains as it was a sunny day. - Amy menutup langsir kerana hari merupakan hari yang panas terik.
9. Vase - Pasu
- Put the flowers into the vase. - Letakkan bunga-bunga ke dalam pasu.
Note: Flower vase - Pasu bunga
Pasu can also mean "pot". One that is used for gardening.
In the Bedroom (Dalam bilik tidur)
1. Bed - Katil
- What is that shadow under the bed? - Apakah bayangan itu di bawah katil?
2. Wardrobe - Almari
- I don't have much clothes in my wardrobe. - Saya tidak mempunyai banyak pakaian di dalam almari saya.
3. Computer - Komputer
- Why isn't the computer turning on? - Mengapakah komputer tidak terhidup?
4. Drawer - Laci
- I have kept the ring hidden in my drawer. - Saya telah menyembunyikan cincin tersebut di dalam laci saya.
5. Alarm clock - Jam loceng
- The alarm clock will ring at 5. - Jam loceng tersebut akan berdering pada pukul lima.
6. Photograph - Gambar / Foto
- Kenny keeps the photograph of his parents on his bedside table. - Kenny menyimpan gambar ibu bapanya di atas meja tepi katilnya.
7. Radio - Radio
- I like the song that is playing on the radio. - Saya suka lagu yang sedang bermain di radio.
8. Pillow - Bantal
- I have three pillows on my bed. - Saya mempunyai tiga bantal di atas katil saya.
9. Mattress - Tilam
- I haven't put bedsheets on my mattress. - Saya belum memasang cadar pada tilam saya.
In the Dining Room (Dalam ruang makan)
1. Plate - Pinggan
- I need a bigger plate. - Saya memerlukan pinggan yang lebih besar.
2. Spoon - Sudu
- I need a spoon for my soup. - Saya memerlukan satu sudu untuk sup saya.
3. Bowl - Mangkuk
- I always serve my dishes in a bowl. - Saya selalu menghidangkan makanan saya dalam sebuah mangkuk.
4. Fork - Garfu
- Can you please give me a fork? - Bolehkah awak memberi saya satu garfu?
5. Cup - Cawan
- You need three cups of flour for this recipe. - Anda memerlukan tiga cawan tepung untuk resipi ini.
6. Chopsticks - Penyepit
- I use chopsticks most of the time. - Saya selalu mengunakan penyepit.
7. Dining table - Meja makan
- Please clear the dining table. - Tolong kosongkan meja makan.
Note: Table in general means meja. Usually, when we are referring to table, be it the dining table, coffee table or a regular table, we usually just use meja.
For example: Please clear the table. - Tolong kosongkan meja.
Sometimes, instead of using "clear the table", we use "clean the table". In Malay, "to clear" means kosongkan / mengosongkan and "to clean" means bersihkan / membersihkan.
For example: Please clear the table. - Tolong kosongkan meja.
Please clean the table. - Tolong bersihkan meja.
8. Chair - Kerusi
- There are four chairs around the table. - Terdapat empat buah kerusi di sekeliling meja.
9. Knife - Pisau
- You need to use a bread knife to spread jam on it. - Awak perlu menggunakan sebilah pisau roti untuk melepakan jem di atasnya.
In the Kitchen (Dalam dapur)
1. Refrigerator (Fridge) - Peti sejuk
- There is no more butter in the fridge. - Sudah tiada mentega dalam peti sejuk.
2. Sink - Sinki
- The soap is on the sink. - Sabun terletak di atas sinki.
3. Microwave - Ketuhar
- I will heat the food in the microwave. - Saya akan memanaskan makanan di dalam ketuhar.
4. Kettle - Cerek (chè-rèk)
- There is some hot water in the kettle. - Terdapat sedikit air panas dalam cerek.
5. Rice cooker - Periuk nasi
- The function of rice cooker is more than just cooking rice. - Kegunaan periuk nasi adalah lebih daripada menanak nasi sahaja.
Note: Although "cook" means "masak". However, when it comes to rice, it is not "memasak nasi" but "menanak nasi".
6. Washing machine - Mesin basuh
- Sometimes, I hand wash my clothes and sometimes I wash them in a washing machine. - Kadangkala saya basuh pakaian saya dengan tangan dan kadangkala saya membasuhnya dalam mesin basuh.
7. Chopping board - Papan pemotong
- Use a chopping board when you cut the onions. - Gunalah papan pemotong ketika awak menghiris bawang merah.
Note: Although "cut" means "memotong" or "potong". However, when it comes to onions (bawang merah) or garlic (bawang putih), it is "menghiris bawang" and not "memotong bawang".
8. Pot - Periuk
- I always use a pot to cook curry. - Saya selalu menggunakan sebuah periuk untuk memasak kari.
9. Stove - Dapur
- I can't use the stove because there is no gas. - Saya tak boleh menggunakan dapur kerana tiada gas.
Note: "Stove" is sometimes referred to as kompor or kompor gas for "gas stove". However, that is in Bahasa Indonesia. In Malaysia, dapur is much preferred. Although, dapur also means "kitchen".
In the Bathroom (Dalam bilik mandi)
1. Towel - Tuala
- I change my towels every day. - Saya menukar tuala saya pada setiap hari.
2. Bathtub - Tab mandi
- Every Friday night, I take a long bath in the bathtub. - Pada setiap malam Jumaat, saya akan mandi lama dalam tab mandi.
3. Toilet bowl - Mangkuk tandas
- The toilet bowl is dirty. - Mangkuk tandas kotor.
4. Mirror - Cermin
- There is no mirror in my toilet. - Tiada cermin dalam tandas saya.
5. Toothbrush - Berus gigi
- I change my toothbrush once a month. - Saya menukar berus gigi saya sebulan sekali.
6. Toothpaste - Ubat gigi
- My favourite toothpaste brand is Colgate. - Jenama ubat gigi kegemaran saya ialah Colgate.
