Do you often go shopping? If so, where? :)
I'm an avid shopper myself. Although, I try to cut back on impulse buying.
About 85% of my monthly expenditure goes to food. Even when I'm out with my friends. Cafe hopping. Not only is it expensive but it has also caused me to go up a couple of dress sizes.
How about you? What do you usually shop for?
In this lesson, I will be entering the topic of shopping. However it's not the grocery list yet. But the places one would go to buy something. In other words, tempat-tempat membeli-belah in Malay.

Here are just a few essential words before we enter the shopping places.
1. Open - Buka
- What time do you open? - Pukul berapakah awak buka?
2. Close - Tutup
- The shops close at 8.30 p.m. - Kedai-kedai tutup pada pukul 8:30 malam.
3. Buy - Membeli
- I have to buy all the ingredients for the cake. - Saya perlu membeli semua bahan untuk membuat kek.
4. Sell - Jual
- Do you sell watches? - Adakah awak menjual jam tangan?
5. Shopping list - Senarai barang-barang membeli
- I'm going to make the shopping list. - Saya akan membuat senarai barang-barang membeli.
1. Shopping centre - Pusat membeli-belah
- I'm looking for the shopping centre. - Saya sedang mencari pusat membeli-belah.
2. The greengrocer's - Pasaraya
- I'm going to the greengrocer's to buy fruits. - Saya akan ke pasaraya untuk membeli buah-buahan.
3. The fishmonger's - Penjual ikan
- That fishmonger sells good quality fishes. - Penjual ikan itu menjual ikan-ikan yang berkualiti.
4. The butcher's - Penjual daging
- I want to buy chicken meat from the butcher's. - Saya ingin membeli daging ayam daripada penjual daging itu.
Note: In Malaysia, although "ingin" means want. However, it is more common to hear people use "nak" which is an improper way of saying want.
For example: Saya ingin membeli daging ayam daripada penjual daging itu.
Saya nak membeli daging ayam daripada penjual daging itu.
5. Bakery - Bakeri
- The bread from that bakery is delicious. - Roti dari bakeri itu sedap.
Note: The word from means "daripada" and "dari" in Malay. When to use "daripada" and "dari"?
Dari: Is used for directions, places and time.
For example: Saya datang dari sana. (Direction)
(I came from there.)
Mereka datang dari Kuala Lumpur. (Place)
(They came from Kuala Lumpur.)
Saya ada kelas dari pukul 1 hingga 3. (Time)
(I have class from 1 to 3.)
Daripada is used for the rest which are not directions, places and time.
6. The stationer's - Kedai alat tulis
- I have to go to the stationer's to buy a pencil and a pen. - Saya perlu pergi ke kedai alat tulis untuk membeli sebatang pensel dan pen.
7. The book shop - Kedai buku
- I'm going to the book shop to buy a novel. - Saya akan pergi ke kedai buku untuk membeli sebuah novel.
8. Coffee shop - Kedai kopi
- Drinks like coffee and simple meals are served here. - Minuman seperti kopi dan makanan ringan dijual di sini.
9. Food court - Medan selera
- Many stalls here sell food and drinks. - Banyak warung di sini yang menjual makanan dan minuman.
10. Restaurant - Restoran
- I'll see you at the restaurant. - Saya akan berjumpa awak di restoran.
11. Music shop - Kedai muzik
- I'm going to get a new guitar at the music shop. - Saya akan membeli gitar baru di kedai muzik.
Note: As you can see, most places have the word "kedai" because it means shop.
12. Clothes shop - Kedai pakaian
- H&M is not a music shop. It's a clothes shop. - H&M bukan sebuah kedai muzik tetapi merupakan sebuah kedai pakaian.
13. Florist - Kedai bunga
- I am going to the florist to get some flowers for my mother. - Saya akan pergi ke kedai bunga untuk membeli bunga untuk ibu saya.
Note: "Kedai bunga" literally translates to flower shop in English.
14. Cake shop - Kedai kek
- A cake shop is a shop that sells cakes. - Kedai kek adalah sebuah kedai yang menjual kek.
15. Hairdresser's - Kedai gunting rambut
- I went to the hairdresser's to get a haircut. - Saya pergi ke kedai gunting rambut untuk memotong rambut saya.
16. Jeweller's - Kedai emas
- I seldom go to the jeweller's. - Saya jarang pergi ke kedai emas.
Note: "Kedai emas" literally means gold shop.
17. Shoe shop - Kedai kasut
- A shoe shop is a shop which sells shoes. - Kedai kasut adalah sebuah kedai yang menjual kasut.
18. Sport's shop - Kedai sukan
- I got my sports attire from that sport's shop. - Saya mendapatkan pakaian sukan saya dari kedai sukan itu.
